Final Project; Week 2— Planning

This week, Aiden and I focused on what the theoretical end goal of our project would be. We theorized that the final edition of our project would look like some entirely open source code that one could easily implement into their website and/or survey that portrays for a more inclusive and expansive view on gender, to not alienate their trans or gender nonconforming users.

We discussed research methods, and decided on two or three that we think we could get a lot of good data out of.

First, we plan on created a graffiti board. Hopefully done in Mural, or a similar website that allows anonymous edits. This would be anonymous, which I think could help our users feel more comfortable in saying what they actually feel.

Next, we wanted to try the love letter method, where the users would write theoretical letters to existing platforms that are less-than-inclusive. We thought that this would be a particularly interesting method that could get some really good responses, and provide a way for our uses to feel comfortable just ripping existing platforms apart.

The last thing we plan on doing is creating some surveys based off of the information gathered in the first two segments. This survey would be more specific, and ask for more more details about the applicants opinions on the topic and ideally have some slightly longer responses, with maybe a bit more nuance added in.

Reflection

Overall, I’m fairly happy with where we are with the project. We still have some weeks left, and the work that we’re planning seems doable in that time. And like Aiden mentioned in his post, the lack of in-person interaction is always a plus, especially with everyone’s crazy schedules.
